Hiring of Teachers Working with English Language Learners
All teachers of any language instruction program for English Language Learners (ELL) need to be fluent and competent in the four domains of language assessed by the English Language Proficiency Assessment: reading, writing, speaking and listening.
When a position is open for an ELL teacher, applicants will complete an online employment application. Completing the online application will require reading instructions and completing required fields. Writing skills will be assessed by the ESL Coordinator and Principal when reviewing the completed application.
If an applicant is selected for an interview, a writing sample will be required (on-site) prior to the interview. The ESL Coordinator, Principal, and others involved in the interview process will assess the writing sample for fluency and competency.
During the interview process, applicants will be asked questions relevant to the position. Their ability to listen to each question and respond appropriately will be assessed by the ESL Coordinator, Principal and others involved in the interview process. Each interviewer will document responses, and judge the level of fluency of the applicant in both speaking and listening.
Each applicant will be scored using a standard rubric. Score sheets will kept on file in the Human Resources files for one year from the interview date.
