TNDOE Approves JCVA!

Jefferson County Schools received word from the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) on Friday, July 2 that the Jefferson County Virtual Academy (JCVA) has been approved. JCVA's office will be located on the Rush Strong School Campus. The academy will operate as an independent school with a STEM focus. JCS looks forward to providing students and families with a flexible and innovative option for students in grades 1 - 12. Students in grades 1 - 5 will attend in person one day each week. We believe it is essential for students to spend time with a teacher in small groups to ensure they are progressing at the expected level. Elementary students will work asynchronously (on their own) each of the other four days. The district will provide additional time for students to work with a teacher virtually. Students in grades 6 - 12 will complete most of their work asynchronously (on their own). Students will have access to staff members for additional support and guidance when needed. Students enrolled in the virtual academy will be required to have internet access. For students without access, the district will provide internet access points in each school parking lot and a lab space at Rush Strong School. Please be aware that all truancy guidelines remain in effect for virtual learning.

Mrs. Deborah Scarlett has been named the administrator for the Jefferson County Virtual Academy. Mrs. Scarlett coordinated the distance learning program for Jefferson County High School during the 2020 - 2021 school year. Per rules set forth by the TDOE, districts will not be able to provide distance learning as it did during the 2020 - 2021 school year. For students to learn virtually, they must enroll in the new virtual academy. The virtual academy is finalizing the student handbook. Once approved by the board, we will have more specific information available for families.

For additional information, please call the district office at (865) 397 - 3194 or email us at The virtual school interest form can be located at If you have completed the virtual school interest form, please check your email for a message from Mrs. Scarlett. The district plans to host an informational session soon. Please stay tuned in to our social media and district website for more information.
