As published in the April 2026 JCS Central Office Update.

Jefferson County Schools is excited to support our youngest learners and their families through the Ready for Kindergarten Project. As families attend Kindergarten Round Up on May 5 at elementary schools across the district, each child will receive a Ready for Kindergarten Kit designed to build confidence, foundational skills, and a love of learning before the school year begins.

Each Ready for Kindergarten Kit is packed with hands-on resources families can easily use at home, including:

  • Play-Doh
  • Lacing card
  • Stickers
  • Alphabet chart
  • Alphabet flash cards
  • Number Path
  • 100s Chart
  • Double Ten Frame
  • Double-sided counters
  • Storytelling sequence cards (three stories with four cards each)
  • Jumbo letter and number tracing pages
  • Crayons
  • Dry-erase lapboard
  • Expo marker

Along with the kit, families will receive a handout featuring a QR code that links to a video library of 18 short videos. These videos highlight simple, practical ways parents and caregivers can use the kit materials to support fine motor development, early reading and writing skills, and math readiness at home.

The stars of the video library are Jefferson County Schools kindergarten teachers Bailey Walker and Samantha Taylor, who generously shared their expertise and enthusiasm while modeling easy activities families can incorporate into everyday routines. Their guidance helps bridge the transition from home to school and empowers families to play an active role in their child’s learning journey.

Special thanks go to Karla Terry, who spearheaded the ordering and organizing of the Ready for Kindergarten Kits and ensured every detail came together smoothly. Appreciation is also extended to Danielle Pullen from the Technology Department for filming the videos, and to Laura McClellan, instructional coach, who provided guidance and support in developing the project from start to finish.

The Ready for Kindergarten Project reflects Jefferson County Schools’ commitment to strong family partnerships and early learning success. We look forward to welcoming our newest students and supporting families as they begin an exciting kindergarten journey together.
